Commonly Asked Questions

Why do children need a COVID-19 vaccine?

It is rare, but some children can become seriously ill with COVID-19 after getting the virus that causes COVID-19.

A COVID-19 vaccine might prevent your child from getting the virus that causes COVID-19. It also may prevent your child from becoming seriously ill or having to stay in the hospital due to the COVID-19 virus.

In the U.S., COVID-19 vaccines are available to children based on their age. The number of shots, also called doses, depends on the vaccine and the child’s vaccine history.

Talk to your healthcare professional if you have any questions about the vaccines for you or your child.

Can children get a reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine?

Children have a similar reaction to adults after getting the COVID-19 vaccine. The most common are:

  • Pain, redness or swelling where the shot was given
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Joint pain
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Children may have a reaction within two days after the vaccination and they can last 1 to 3 days. It is not recommended that you give your child a pain relief medicine before the vaccine to prevent any reaction. Ask your healthcare team at Marin Community Clinics about giving pain relief medicine that doesn’t contain aspirin after your child gets a COVID-19 vaccine.

Who can get the vaccine?

Talk to your doctor if you have questions about getting a COVID-19 vaccine. COVID-19 vaccines have been approved by everyone 6 months and older. We encourage you to get the vaccine, particularly if you are at high risk for severe COVID-19 illness. This includes people 65 and older, people who are pregnant, or those who have medical conditions. Learn more about people at increased risk for illness.

I’ve already had COVID-19, should I still get vaccinated?

If you’ve had COVID-19, you may have some protection (immunity) from the virus, but we don’t know how long that will last. Without vaccination, your immunity may decrease over time. Visit the CDC website for more information.

What are the common reactions to the vaccine?

Some people may experience mild to moderate headache, tiredness, muscle aches, pain, fever, or swelling in the injection site. These side effects typically last 1 to 2 days and are a sign that the body’s immune response is working. For more information on vaccine side effects, visit the CDC website.

I already have the Flu/RSV vaccine, do I need to wait to get the COVID-19 vaccine?

There is no recommended waiting time between getting a COVID-19 vaccine and other vaccines. Please visit the CDC page for more information.

What can I do to continue staying safe if I’m not yet vaccinated?

People who aren’t vaccinated can make sure to avoid others who are sick, wash their hands, and keep a distance when around other people. For a full list of recommendations, visit the CDC website.

I think I have COVID-19, what do I do now?

Please visit the CDC website for steps to take if you are sick.
