Meet Marin Community Clinics Pediatrician Lisa Leavitt, MD, MPHLeavitt

Pediatrician Dr. Lisa Leavitt is well-known in Marin County for her commitment to helping children reach their full potential. Not only has she provided medical care to hundreds of Clinics patients, but she is deeply involved in community-wide efforts to improve the lives of children.

Dr. Leavitt, who joined the Clinics staff in 1996, went into medicine because she liked working with children and guiding parents. “As a pediatrician, I have a unique opportunity to make an impact on their lives,” she reports.

“Developing relationships with entire families over time is extremely rewarding. I care for children throughout their lives and see families through their ‘ups and downs.’ The parents are hardworking and really love their children, and they have so much gratitude for the care we provide.”

Provides a broad spectrum of care

Dr. Leavitt provides a broad spectrum of care: regular checkups, treatment of childhood illnesses, developmental screening, and parent education. And she pays close attention to families’ emotional and social needs. One of several pediatric hospitalists at Marin General Hospital, she also follows Clinics patients who have been hospitalized, cares for newborns, and works in the intensive care nursery.

Advocates for prevention and education

Her overriding passion is prevention. “Prevention is the key to promoting lifelong health,” she says. “In order for it to be successful, we have to start young.”

Currently the vice-chair of Marin’s First 5 Children and Families Commission, she is a strong advocate for vaccinations, mental health services, and developmental screening. She is
also active with Marin Strong Start, a coalition that seeks to secure a stable source of funding to ensure access to preschool, quality health and wellness services, affordable child care, and after-school academic support.
